How to get to Shark Fin Cove

Shark fin Cove is 10 miles from Santa Cruz-California, 1.4 miles from Davenport and 56 miles from 17 mile drive. There are no proper parking lots available but rather a car pull out which is easy to miss. There are no sign boards for this place. Keep an eye on Pacific Ocean and pull out your car as soon as you spot massive rock resembling Shark Fin.

Hike to Shark Fin Rock Beach

Once you are off the car, cross an old rail track and look for a narrow trail. Trail down to the beach is a little steep, narrow and rocky. Be careful as the rocks and sand might be slippery. Take your time and extra caution if you happen to visit during rainy season. Enjoy breathtaking views of the shark fin while on the way down to the cove.

Small secret beach welcomes us once we are in the cove. Ice cold water and shining sun with limited people makes this place a perfect evening get away from city hustle bustle. Enjoy either playing in icy cold water or building sand castles with your little ones.

Shark Fin Rock

Thousands of years ago, today’s Shark fin rock was the extension of the mudstone cliff that encloses the beach. But over the years the force of crashing waves and winds eroded the rock resulting in a rock which resembles Shark fin today. Some say the rock resembles Shark tooth and so they also call this place Shark tooth beach.

Shark fin rock is best viewed from above walking along the edges of the agricultural fields.

As we get down the cove, first thing that we see is a small Sea cave on the left. If it’s not a stormy day then you will be lucky to walk inside the cave to take a breath taking view of the Shark fin rock. It is said that the waves slowly eroded the rock. Be carful of the incoming tides.

Shark fin rock is best viewed from the top, walking along the sides of the mudstone cliff. This is also the best place to watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. Be carful as you walk along the cliff.

Travel Tips

  1. There are no sign boards. Have an eye along the Pacific Ocean to Spot Shark Fin Rock.
  2. Rocks are slippery- Be careful as you walk down to the beach.
  3. Dogs, glass, alcohol, camping, vehicles are not allowed.
  4. Be careful about falling rocks, Currents, unstable cliffs and incoming tides.
  5. Pack it in – Pack it Out. No Garbage Collection in the area.
