Muir Woods and its History

Muir Woods Entrance

Muir woods National Monument is very close to San Francisco city and in the middle of redwood’s latitudinal range. During the early 1900s, people had cut most of California’s redwoods. Lumbers were needed for houses, forts and many other structures. However the forest along Redwood creek in today’s Muir woods was not touched because of two reasons.

  1. It was hard to get there.
  2. Owners William Kent and his wife Elizabeth Thacher Kent protected this place.

In order to protect the redwoods, the Kents donated land to the Federal Government. The then President Theodore Roosevelt declared it as a national monument. President Roosevelt named this place Muir National monument after renowned conservationist John Muir as per Kent’s wish.
